East girls trying to be contender After winning only two divisional meets last year, Williamsville East girls gymnastics coach Sarah Pici thinks this season's crop of gymnasts will help the team be a competitive force in Division II. "We seem to have a more consistent group of girls," said Pici. "The girls that have returned from last year have worked very hard in the offseason, and it shows. Our new girls have a great deal of skill that they are bringing to our team. It may be difficult to determine who competes what event each meet. That is a great problem for a coach to have. I am also impressed with how hard each girl works to improve." The team will be led by senior tri-captains Megan Krol, Rosie McAfee and Alyssa Engel. Krol works the all-around and has beauty and grace as she competes, said Pici. McAfee competes on bars and balance beam; Engel shows the girls hard work as she practices bars and beam, Pici added. Other East gymnasts include eighth-graders Kristen Kelly and Ashley Materise, who each competed at last year's Section VI Championships. Kelly competed on vault, beam and floor; Materise was on vault and bars. "This was their first year competing for high school and did well in their first appearance at the sectionals meet," said Pici. "This year they are both Level 7 gymnasts at Stumpf's Gymnastics and have improved greatly since last season." Other girls on the team are eighth-graders Emily Rosen, Alexandra Shilen and Danielle Silvestri, freshman Sarah Richheimer and sophomore Shanelle Raugh. Pici said she does not have a starting rotation yet and is continuing to watch the girls during practice. "I expect each girl to see time competing this year," said Pici. "This year, we may see a mix of different girls on different events in each meet." Pici said team goals are to improve throughout the season, as indicated by their team scores at meets and to have more girls qualify and compete at sectionals. Pici also has a new assistant coach, Jillian Rindos.
"This is her first year coaching high school gymnastics but has taught and competed in the past," said Pici. "She graduated from Lancaster High School a few years ago, and so far has been a wonderful asset to the team." |
