Many comebacks for North
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville North finished seventh in team scoring at last year's Section VI Championships, its highest finish in years. And with only three seniors graduated, the Lady Spartans are ready to improve on their 4-2 divisional record with several returning gymnasts.

The team will be led by three captains, senior Sarah Mikulski and juniors Sarah Carbrey and Megan Dressel. All three qualified for sectionals last year. Mikulski made it on vault and balance beam; Carbrey for vault, beam and floor exercise; and Dressel on vault, bars and floor.

Mikulski and Carbrey will compete in all-around this year. They excel the most on beam and floor exercise, said North coach Sharon Hirsch. Hirsch said Carbrey is also good on the bars; Dressel will compete on bars, her best event, and floor exercise.

Hirsch speaks highly of her captains.

"Sarah Mikulski is a great role model and has a strong work ethic," said Hirsch. "She works well with other kids. She's been a great asset for four years and it's going to be tough to lose her."

"You can count on Sarah Carbrey," Hirsch continued. "She does all the work that needs to be done by a captain. She also works well with the younger kids. I'm glad she will be back for another year."

Hirsch said Dressel has competed for North since seventh grade and works hard. She competed in all-around in the past but had to stop after giving up club gymnastics three years ago.

Also returning who should contribute are sophomore Torri Maccagnano and eighth- grader Lily Jagodzinski. Both compete in all-around and compete at the club level, Maccagnano at Greater Buffalo, Jagodzinksi with Gleason's.

Maccagnano, entering her fourth year on the team, has had some tough luck once sectionals roll around. The first time she was scheduled to go to sectionals she got mononucleosis; the second time she was injured.

"She doesn't have high scores but she's good across the board for a solid routine," said Hirsch.

Jagodzinski competed in floor, beam and bars at sectionals last year. Her strongest event is floor, Hirsch said.

The rest of the team is strictly high school gymnasts. They include senior Amber Hammonds (beam, floor) and Avery Kretschman (beam, floor); juniors Amanda Sheriff (vault, bars), Brianna Lanoye (beam, floor), Kate Barone (beam, floor), Daniela Guzman (beam, floor), Kayla Kruger (vault, bars), Morgan King (bars), Rachel Baudanza (vault, floor), Sarah Feirle (manager), Michelle Riggi (manager); sophomore Courtney Hyatt (bars, floor); freshmen Jennifer Apter (bars, beam, floor), Alyssa Lanoye (beam, floor), Tory Trzyna (beam, floor), and Kaitlin Lunney (beam, floor); and seventhgraders Allison Corretore, Emily Joyce, Demi Xenos and Amber Moser.

North is hosting sectionals on Nov. 3. The time is yet to be determined.
