Big first half lifts Lew-Port over South
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Another slow start equaled another Williamsville South loss in football this past week.

Lewiston-Porter built a 21-0 first half cushion and went on to beat the Billies, 28-6, last Saturday at South.

"We need to get out of the gate better," said South coach Kraig Kurzanski.

South couldn't stop Lancer running back Alex Penders. The 215-pound back ran 32 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns.

Lew-Port took the opening kickoff 73 yards down the field and Penders capped off the drive with a two-yard score. His second TD came from 34 yards out with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

"They were physical up front and their tailback is a good player," said Kurzanski. "We had a tough time with him."

Lew-Port scored on its second possession of the game, a 27-yard by Josh Reed and added a 15-yard pass from Matt Catarin to Robert Daggett.

South's only points came on a three-yard TD pass from Daeshaune Clark to Arman Wood in the third quarter. The Billies' Tim Krempa intercepted a pass at the Lew-Port 48 to set up the scoring drive.

South outscored Lew-Port, 7-6, in the second half.

"I was happy with the way we fought back," said Kurzanski. "We were able to get a couple of stops on fourth down and move the ball more efficiently. "The kids put forth a great effort."

Clark finished 8 of 18 for 53 yards with a TD and interception and rushed 17 times for 101 yards.

Defensive end Anthony Erbacher anchored the Billies' defense with 12 tackles. Linebacker Chris Hauser made nine tackles. Howard Clark recovered a fumble in the second quarter.

South (0-2) plays at Williamsville East (0-2) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

"Someone is going to get their first win on Saturday and I hope it's us," said Kurzanski.
