Depth a question for Amherst
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Amherst Central golf coach Joe Marszalek is happy with his top four golfers; it's the rest of the lineup that he's unsure about.

"I think we have three to four guys who can compete with anybody," said Marszalek. "We need somebody at five, six, seven and eight to step up the plate. If they can shoot bogey golf, we can be competitive in the division."

Marszalek returns seven Amherst golfers from last's year 6-6 team; however, only three are starters - senior Marty Jeras and sophomores Will Pelham and Jake Struebing.

Jeras, who competed in last year's ECICs, returns as the team's top golfer. He is a co-captain with senior Mike Hong.

"Marty has worked on his short game and gotten better at the mental part," said Marszalek. "He has the opportunity to break 40 (over nine holes) every time he goes out."

Marszalek said hopefully, Jeras will have the opportunity to go back to ECICs, and this time advance to the Section VI championships this spring.

Struebing and Pelham have played at the second and third spots, respectively, this season.

"Will and Jake have the potential to break 40 in every single match," said Marzalek. "They're hard-working kids whose goals include making the ECIC tournament this year."

Other returning players include Hong and sophomore Adam Dannanhoffer, who were part-time starters last year. Juniors Mike Wright and Alex Rockoff, two other returning players, and senior Mike Gruttadauria, will fight it out for a starting position in the lineup.

Senior Al McQuiggan, sophomore Nick Pantano and freshmen Joe Gallivan, Ryan Schmidt and Griffin Kramer will look to get playing time, said Marszalek.

Amherst opened its season with a 296-298 loss to Sweet Home last Thursday. Jeras was top medalist with a 38. Pelham shot 39; Struebing hit 40.

They lost 314-288 against Williamsville North on Monday.
