Spartans to field balanced lineup Life without arguably its best golfer in school history, Jake Katz, begins at Williamsville North. Katz, the reigning ECIC scoring champion who took third at sectionals, graduated and is attending Binghamton University. Even though there is no Katz, it doesn't mean the Spartans won't field a solid lineup this fall. "Jake Katz would come out every round and lead us with a great score," said North coach John Burns. "We're not going to get that super low score that Jake gave us, but we're trying to be consistent so our first and eighth golfer's scores are pretty close." Burns returns seniors E.J. Kuebler, Alex Ulrich and Matt Sweeney. Kuebler, the team's No. 2 behind Katz last year, is penciled in at No. 1. Ulrich is No. 2. Sweeney will be somewhere in the starting lineup. "Hopefully, all three will provide leadership and step in and give us some consistent scores in the low range," said Burns. Kuebler, who is also team captain, qualified for sectionals last year. Burns said Kuebler is capable of shooting in the 30s for nine holes. "He's consistent," said Burns. "He doesn't really ever take the big number, but when he plays, you count on him." Ulrich averages around 40 for nine holes; Sweeney averages in the low 40s. Other players who will be somewhere in the lineup are senior Jack Mitchell, juniors Frank Knab, Matt Proven, Tim Simpkin and Ben Cerny, sophomores Dan O'Connor, Ben Katz and Brian Askey, and eighth-grader Jake Rosen. Junior Cam Sroda would have been the team's No. 2, but he recently broke his hand in a hockey tournament, which will sideline him for at least a month, Burns said. Burns said the team has experience with youth. "We have first-year players with experience that we expect to be as good as our seniors," said Burns. "At the same time, guys like Sweeney, Knab, Kuebler and Ulrich have been around for a couple of years, so they have some experience to help the newer players along." North, 6-3 last year, lost its opener on Sept. 5, 295-324, against Clarence at Brookfield Country Club. They beat Amherst 288-314 on Monday. They played Williamsville South on Tuesday but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press.
"Our goal is to always compete for the ECIC Large School North Championship," said Burns. "Clarence and Williamsville East will be strong, but we're hoping to be in the mix if we play well. It's going to come down to if the seniors can step in and be consistent as we move through the season." |
