Underclassmen dominate South

With only one senior on the roster, new Williamsville South golf coach Al Monaco will look to a group of underclassmen to comprise most of the 2007 starting lineup.

Sophomores Ron Munley, Clark Zhang and P.J. Klocke and freshman Evan Martone are among the top eight golfers on the team. Sophomores AJ Scheuckler, who missed out making the team last year by one stroke, and Greg Dimock, as well as eighth grader Trevor Simonick, are trying to crack a spot in the top eight.

"The strength of our club is our sophomore class," said Monaco. "Our two, three and four golfers (Munley, Zhang, Klocke) are all sophomores."

The team has only three upperclassmen - senior John Winstel and juniors Taylor Gesel and Greg Frank. Winsteal and Gesel will start. Frank is battling for a spot in the bottom of the lineup.

Winstel is the team's top golfer and has shot as low as 33 for nine holes during practice at Audubon. He qualified for ECICs last year.

"He's got a legit game," said Monaco. "He drives it long but has a great short game. He has the ability to get up and down around the green. His chipping is smooth. I'm anxious to see him play on country club courses."

Monaco also likes Winstel's leadership.

"He has taken younger kids under his wing and helps them out," said Monaco. "He really knows the game and has been a spectacular leader."

Rounding out the team is sophomore Matt Battistoni and freshman Zack Frank.

Monaco said the team's success will depend on the play of whoever starts in the five through eight spots.

"They all want to improve and have a great attitude," said Monaco, the Tri-County Country Club's member champion this past year.

South finished 3-6 in the ECIC North large school division last year.

South opened on Monday with a 330-283 home loss against Williamsville East. They played versus Williamsville North at Westwood Country Club on Tuesday but results were unavailable before The Bee went to press.
