Sports brief Williamsville residents Anne and Dr. Charles Tirone will receive the Russell J. Gugino Award at the 35th Dr. and Mrs. Edmund J. Gicewicz Family University at Buffalo Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony on Oct. 5. The Hall of Fame was named earlier this year in honor of Edmond and Connie Gicewicz of Getzville. Named in honor of past UB Alumni Association president and UB athletics supporter Russell J. Gugino, the award recognizes UB alumni (individual, couple or group) who have made significant contributions of time and resources to the university's athletics program. The Tirones are UB Alumni Association members and lifelong supporters of UB athletics. Charles Tirone is a member of the Hall of Fame football team that won the Lambert Cup in 1958. Both are regular attendees at UB sporting events, as well as contributors to the division. To purchase tickets, contact UB Office of Alumni Relations at 645-3312. Tickets are $65 for members of either the UB Alumni Association or UB Blue & White Club and $75 for nonmembers. William Smith College sophomore and Amherst resident Katie Pietrak was recently named Liberty League Women's Cross Country Co-Performer of the Week. Pietrak, a Nardin Academy graduate, won the season opening State University of New York Institute of Technology Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 1. She covered the 5-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 55.9 seconds, edging Daemen's Amy Farner by 2.1 seconds. The victory is the first of her career and second top-10 finish. The 'AAA' Mite Minor hockey team opened the season with a 3-2 win over West Seneca. Griffin Green started the scoring for Amherst late in the first period off a rebound shot from Patrick Gilbert. Zach Rehbaum tied it up in the second with a beautiful breakaway goal. Early in the third, Rehbaum put Amherst in the lead from a great feed from Matthew Barbolini. Goalie Ben Weppner was great in net, making one nice save after another. The defense was strong, keeping West Seneca in check to give Amherst the win. A leading local/regional 13-year-old tournament baseball team is seeking three or four additional strong players. For more information, call Jim at 480-2570. Ainsley Stoll, a Williamsville resident and Williamsville North graduate, scored a goal in the Oneonta State College field hockey team's 2-0 win on Sunday over Manhattanville. Oneonta is 2-2 on the season. |
