Eleven-year-old John Schmitt recently sank a hole in one on the 145-yard eighth hole at Audubon Par-3 Golf Course.

The Amherst 14U Thunder fastpitch softball team will conduct open tryouts from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Amherst Pepsi Center, 1615 Amherst Manor Drive.

To be eligible, girls must be 14 years or younger as of Jan. 1, 2008.

The Thunder practice throughout the winter in area indoor facilities, play a regular season schedule and playoffs in the Metro Girls Softball League, and will participate in a number of invitational tournaments.

Amherst High graduate Andre Hakeem had five carries for 71 yards and a 39-yard touchdown to lead the Erie Community College football team to a convincing 53-0 win over Berean Institute from Philadelphia, Pa. in front of 450 fans.
