Sharks return state qualifier
Girls golf
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Courtney Connors is only a junior at Sacred Heart Academy but she has already made her mark on the golf course.

In 2005, Connors became the first Sacred Heart golfer to appear in a New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association golf tournament, finishing in eighth place. She qualified again this past spring but did not attend, said Sharks coach Theresa Brady.

Connors, the team's No. 1 member, is off to another good start, medaling with a 44 in the Sharks' 265-252 loss to Nardin last Wednesday at Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, Ont.

"She's consistent and even tempered," said Brady, who is assisted by Sr. Maria Pares and Ann Swan. "She doesn't make many mistakes. Her putting is as great as her drives. She also has a great attitude."

Other golfers who will contribute for Sacred Heart is coach Brady's daughter, Siobhan, a junior, and senior co-captains, Nora Balon and Katie Salisbury. Sophomores Mary Canty and Reba Conway have also improved their game since last year, said coach Brady.

Also on the team are junior and freshman sisters, Caitlin and Meghan Doyle, junior Lindsay Berry, sophomore Catherine Trzaska, and freshmen Sarah Eyeington and Mikaela Brady, another daughter of coach Brady.

Coach Brady said against Nardin, Caitlin Doyle drove a ball over 200 yards. Mikaela Brady was a 9-hole champion at Cherry Hill.

Coach Brady thinks her team has more depth this year.

"The top six to eight golfers are consciously working at their game," she said. "You can tell. I think they're going to do great things. I feel really positive about the whole year."

Sacred Heart finished second in the Monsignor Martin Association regular season and third at All-Catholics.

The Sharks beat Mt. Mercy, 256-294, on Friday.
