Out of the Past 125 Years Ago Sept. 14, 1882 Dr. D.W.C. Huntington will be in Williamsville on Saturday next to deliver his popular lecture titled "Rambles in Europe" at the M.E. Church. The doctor has lately returned from an extended tour of Europe and all those who attend will have a rare treat. Admission, 25 cents; children, 10 cents. Last Friday morning as Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Youngs of Williamsville were en route to Java, this county, their horse shied at a stone in the road, throwing the occupants suddenly out of the buggy. Mr. Youngs suffered a gash to his hand, besides other bruises. After the buggy capsized the horse stopped, and no damage was done to the vehicle. Yesterday the derrick on the bank of the creek used for hoisting stone fell, and mason George Wright had a narrow escape. The rope with which a Kansas murderer was hanged has been woven into bookmarks and given to members of the convicting jury. "'Thirty years ago, I was a poor boy,' a man proudly observed to a reporter. 'Step by step I rose from a menial position earning $2 a week until I became a member of the Legislature and here I am at last.' The interview was held at the gentleman's place of residence - the State Prison at Auburn." "A woman asked at the rail station for a ticket to Wyandotte and return. The gentlemanly agent asked as he looked up, 'Single?' 'It ain't any of your business,' she responded tartly". 100 Years Ago Sept. 12, 1907 A new revolving desk chair has been presented to the Williamsville High School by the Class of 1907. The District 8 School was opened with Miss Grace E. Dumanois as the teacher. Officers of the school district are J.B. Schuck, trustee; Philip Roeser, collector; and George Heberler, clerk. 75 Years Ago Sept. 15, 1932 Primary elections will take place next Tuesday, September 20. There is more than usual local interest this year due to the fact that Alfred F. Beiter, town supervisor, is a candidate for the nomination of congressman, 41st District. The students at Amherst Central High School returned to their studies last week. This is the third opening of the high school and the first year that Amherst Central has had a senior class. A sauerkraut dinner will be served by the Men's Bible Class of the Ascension Lutheran Church, Main Street and Burroughs Drive, Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets, 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. It grades its pupils not by the luxury of their homes but by the willingness to work and learn." 50 Years Ago Sept. 12, 1957 While the building industry as a whole is reporting a slowdown, and other towns around Buffalo show a decrease in their building permits, construction in the Town of Amherst continues to climb steadily. Louis Witnauer, who has served as postmaster of the East Amherst Post Office for 47 years, is not looking forward to his retirement on Sept. 30. His health is excellent, which is not conducive to lounging about, passing the days by watching TV. The Tigers are the champions of the Joe Mc- Carthy Little League, nosing out the Yankees in the final week of the schedule. 25 Years Ago Sept. 8, 1982 Although the new Alumni Arena will not be dedicated until Dec. 4, it will be the site of the inauguration of at the University at Buffalo President Steven B. Sample next month. Gubernatorial candidate Lew Lehrman made a campaign stop Thursday night at Island Park. Amherst will again play host to the Long John Silver Charity Invitational Basketball Tournament this December, but with twice as many teams.
