Support for dog park resurrected Whatever happened to the idea of Amherst having a dog park? There were a few articles and meetings about it quite a while ago and then nothing. Whatever came of the meetings? Many cities throughout the United States are way ahead of us being "dog-friendly," having more than one dog park within a certain mile radius. Why can't Amherst jump on the bandwagon and provide the residents with a place to take our dogs to socialize with other dogs and provide a legal place to have the dogs roam and play? I have a large yard for my dog to play in but would love for him to be able to socialize with other dogs. I would love to have the group who originally wanted this to have more meetings and get this under way. Many cities do it, and so can we. Please, don't tell me to take my dog to LaSalle Park. Why would I want to drive all the way to the outer city when I moved from the city to Amherst because of all it has to offer for my family (except a dog park)? I have many great parks to take my children to but none for our dog. Many dog parks are sponsored by local businesses, and usually a group forms to keep the park clean and to make sure all the dogs are licensed and up to date on all shots. All we need is a place to have the dogs roam (within a fenced-in area), a watering spot and some containers and supplies for waste. Some dog parks even have a small pond or stream for the dogs to romp in. I am very interested in helping to get a dog park in the Amherst area sometime in the near future.
