Make this school year the year obesity isn't an issue And all the prevention articles read the same, telling the reader to eat smaller portions, exercise more and eat a balanced diet. Can we say, duh? There isn't a magic answer to staying in shape. Many just want an easier answer than the one they read the day before, the week before or the month before. But the answer isn't changing. Information on how to eat healthy is available. Experts continue to attest that it's not complicated, but it does take a lifestyle change, a change that may be difficult to fit into an already hectic schedule full of sports practices, music lessons, work and family time. However, with school having just started last week families should pledge to make this year the year they learn to eat right and make time to exercise. And if you don't have kids in school, make the change because summer is turning into fall. Or because the Buffalo Bills are back in action. Or whatever reason it takes to get your weight under control and your body healthy. Don't wait for Jan. 1, because one, resolutions are never kept, and, two, winters in Buffalo and all that great winter comfort food make it hard to get to a gym and eat right. So get started now. The YMCA of Buffalo Niagara is offering "Growing up Fit," a program for youth ages 7-15 years old and their families. It's a weight management program that is designed to encourage the whole family to take charge of their health together. The program consists of an initial health assessment, eight weeks of education and exercise, a post-assessment and a graduation celebration. A parent or guardian participates with his or her child, and siblings are also encouraged to attend. The Northeast Family Branch, 4433 Main St., Amherst, will run the program from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m Saturdays, Sept. 19 to Nov. 24. Several local insurance agencies will cover the entire cost of "Growing Up Fit" for their subscribers. Those supporting the program are: Child Health Plus, Community Blue, Family Health Plus, Traditional Blue and Univera. The program is paid for in part by Independent Health and FlexFit Family. For more information or to register, call "Growing up Fit" at 818-8232 or log on to www.growingupfit.com. Make a healthy change for you and your family with a better diet and exercise. |
