Michael Gallo, retired master carpenter Michael Gallo, 87, of Amherst, a retired master carpenter, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007. Mr. Gallo attended public schools in Phillipsburg, Pa. He lived in Phillipsburg until he moved to Buffalo in 1951. He settled in Amherst in 1954. As a youth, Mr. Gallo served in the Civilian Conservation Corp., reforesting areas in a program started by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933. He was employed by the General Cigar plant in Phillipsburg, at Yeager Construction where he built homes in Cheektowaga and at the Sylvania plant on Great Arrow Drive in Buffalo until its closure. He was a master carpenter for a variety of contractors until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Gallo was an active member of Trinity Old Lutheran Church in Amherst, serving on a variety of committees since 1954. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed building everything from furniture to homes and additions. Mr. Gallo was an avid and proficient golfer, teaching the game to youth in Amherst, and was a regular on many leagues, most recently the Senior Men's league at Oakwood Golf Course. His passion for golf extended to collecting golf memorabilia and building display cases for his many awards and trophies. Mr. Gallo is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Martha B. Parks; two sons, Michael J. and Samuel A.; a daughter, Darlene Wutz; and two grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 4 from Harry A. Wedekindt Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Buffalo. |
