Greased lightning

The Amherst Players will slide into their 60th anniversary season with "Grease," Sept. 6-16 at the Harlem Road Community Center, 4255 Harlem Road in Amherst.

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, "Grease" captures the look and sound of the 1950s in a rollicking musical. The production is directed by David Hall, with musical direction by Leigha Eichhorn and choreography by Kathie Montante Prospero.

Rydell High's spirited class of '59 is a gum chewing, hubcap stealing, hot-rod loving boys and wise-cracking girls in bobby sox and pedal pushers

While hip Danny Zuko and wholesome Sandy Dumbrowski resolve the problems of their mutual attraction, the gang sings and dances its way through such nostalgic scenes as the pajama party, the prom, the burger palace and the drive-in movie.

Songs recall the Buddy Holly hiccups, the Little Richard yodels and the Elvis Presley wiggles that made the music of the '50s so infectious. Grease's eight-year run made Broadway history and its recent long running revival put it among today's most popular music als.

Memorable songs include "Greased Lightning," "Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee," "We Go Together," "Beauty School Dropout" and others.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Sept. 6-8 and 13-15; and 1:30 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 8 and 9, 15 and 16.

Tickets are $10 general, $8 for seniors (55-plus) and students, and $5 for children under 12.
