Out of the Past Out 125 Years Ago Sept. 7, 1882 There is quite a feeling in this country on the very extraordinate prices of school books. Books that retailed before the war for thirty-five to fifty cents now sell at a dollar, though they cost no more to make now than they did then. People who are disposed to grumble in regard to slow progress on the Main Street bridge should remember that the water in the creek was higher in the spring for a much longer time than usual. On last Tuesday night, after an illness of three weeks from malarial fever, Fran G. Miller died at his residence in Eggertsville. "Ask some men to purchase an advertisement and they will answer, 'Nobody reads your paper.' But let the same man be caught kissing another man's wife or trying to hold up a street lamp and his tone changes immediately. If the newspaper office is in the garret of a seven-story building, he will climb to the top and beg the editor to keep the item out the paper, as all of his acquaintances in seven counties would get on to it." A pioneer wedding occurred in the town of Perry, Wyoming County, last week. Deacon Samuel Waldo, who was a widower for the fifth time, was married to Miss Harriet Hammond. The groom is about 86 and the bride is about 70 years of age. "What is it which no man wishes to have and no man wishes to lose? A bald head." "An Indiana man lost 15 steers by lightning. What this country needs is a breed of cattle born with lightning rods instead of horns." 100 Years Ago Sept. 5, 1907 The new St. Mary's schoolhouse at Swormville is progressing rapidly. Mr. George Heimberger is in charge of construction. The Williamsville Hose Co. marched in the Firemen's Parade at Buffalo, with the 40 men headed by J.A.C. Dodge and Clarence Weber. 75 Years Ago Sept. 8, 1932 Christ the King School has added 8th grade work to the curriculum for this year. Grades now number 1 through 8, in which eighty pupils are registered. Nuns from Mount St. Joseph comprise the faculty. with Sister Patrick as principal. The passing of Mrs. William F. Albrecht occurred at her home on Main Street on Sunday, September 4, 1932. Sorrow was widespread at the announcement. One of the early fall events will be the corn and wiener roast to be given by the North Amherst Chemical Company on Saturday, September 17 at Mohawk Grove, Wendelville. Basher's White Diner, 4469 Main Street at Harlem Road, the only lunch room between Buffalo and Batavia, advertises a special Sunday chicken dinner, 50 cents. Lost: "Auto tire and wire wheel in the vicinity of Creek Road, Williamsville, sometime between Saturday and Tuesday. Phone 114-R." 50 Years Ago Sept. 5, 1957 An Amherst woman owes her life to the bravery of Patrolman Walter Centner of the Amherst Police and William Belinson of the Eggertsville Hose Co. The woman was found unconscious in her smoke-filled apartment at 73 Brant Road this past Tuesday morning. Amherst Police arrested a California man of obtaining money under false pretenses after receiving complaints from Williamsville housewives. The man claimed to be soliciting funds for derelict alcoholics. The sale of liquor, wine and beer for on-premesis consumption is prohibited throughout the state while polls are open on Primary Day, Sept. 10. 25 Years Ago Sept. 1, 1982 Groundbreaking for Part II of the Lockport Expressway will be held at noon tomorrow at the rear of the Getzville Fire Hall, 630 Dodge Road. U.S. Senator Daniel P. Moynihan and Rep. Henry J. Nowak are scheduled to attend. After four years with the downtown Buffalo branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Libraries, Mary Jane Kibby of Williamsville has been named assistant librarian of the Clarence branch. SS. Peter & Paul Church was the setting as Lynn Marie MacLeod and Blake Frederick Strom were united in marriage on Friday, Aug. 27. |
