Become part of the budget process
Bee Editorial
If last year's budget process proved anything it's that the Town of Amherst needs to get started sooner. That means everyone involved.

By failing to adopt the budget on time, departments may have been shortchanged and residents overcharged. Smart, creative solutions can help with the budget.

This is one situation where more cooks don't spoil the soup. Department heads need to be aggressive because they know better than anyone what their departments need.

By more people being involved, offering compromises and solutions, the town will be able to continue to provide a high level of service at a fair price.

Many residents have spoken at board meetings, saying that they don't live in Amherst for low taxes but for the quality of life. With that being said, they aren't looking for high taxes, but it's a known fact Amherst is "better off" than other towns.

Across the country, municipalities are always looking for ways to do more with less. Take ideas, get involved, eliminate the waste and fund what is important.

Last year a few departments were visibly favored by certain council members. While it's nearly impossible to label one more important than the other there are factors that need to be addressed first. Safety is a top priority, and many departments have their hand in maintaining a high level.

Everyone has a different view on what should be funded and what can be cut. Don't wait until the tentative budget is complete to voice your opinion. As you read this, Supervisor Satish Mohan is busy putting together the 2008 budget. If you know something that is in need of attention, then bring attention to it.

The budget affects your taxes. This is your town, not just those who have offices in Town Hall. Mohan has said time and time again he is open and willing to speak to concerned residents, so take advantage of the invitation. And while you are at it, add the council members on that e-mail, give them a phone call or stop by their offices. They were elected by you, to serve you. Tell them what you want.

Since there is nothing that can be done when the supervisor or board members stonewall requests, we just hope that they actually listen to those who choose to offer suggestions. Mohan said he plans to have the budget ready for adoption on Oct. 29, so now is the time to get involved. 2007 was a difficult year for some departments' budgets, so use that knowledge to insist on funding for the areas that suffered. Where there is a will there is a way ... and the squeaky wheel (usually) gets the grease.
