Sept. 18 is designated Discover Wellness Day Wellness doctors and professionals are marking their calendars in celebration of the first Discover Wellness Month and Discover Wellness Day, Sept. 18. Dr. Allison Cummings joins Dr. Bob Hoffman and Dr. Jason A. Deitch, co-authors of the best-selling book "Discover Wellness: How Staying Healthy Can Make You Rich," in raising local awareness of Discover Wellness Month. "This national campaign addresses solutions to America's health care crisis by improving the health and vitality of every American by inspiring people to choose better health through better living and providing access to the best practices of health and wellness," Cummings said. "This event will have special meaning in our local community." Cummings added that she will be working with community organizations and individuals to energize the collective commitment to reducing the risk of preventable disease and avoiding medical bankruptcy. "The celebration and events include wellness activities that raise awareness of the importance of nutrition, healthy habits and exercise and will help people to understand and appreciate the relationship between better health and greater wealth," she said. Deitch also commented on the event, saying, "The ultimate solution to America's health care crisis is to have more people less sick, a goal that is achievable through smarter lifestyle choices." The seven-step solution offered in Discover Wellness points readers toward simple solutions to achieve better health through better living including improved alignment, nutrition, exercise, healthy thinking and healthy habits. Citizens are encouraged to get involved in a variety of activities including: • Walking or biking instead of driving; • Attending discussions at the Jewish Community Center on Delaware Avenue on topics concerning healthy habits such as nutrition, meditation, yoga and other stress-relieving activities for the prevention of breast cancer; • Attending a workshop presented by Becky Davis, "raw food coach," on how to incorporate more live foods into a diet and the importance of live food nutrition; • Taste testing and educational discussions on nutrition (fruits, vegetables, recipes and supplements).
