St. Pius X Padres hosted and defeated St. Mary's of Lancaster, 5-4, to win the Catholic Youth Organization championship softball game on Aug. 21. The Padres took an early 3-0, lead but St. Mary's of Lancaster answered with strong defensive plays and an awakening offense. St. Mary's of Lancaster took the lead but stuck it out with some strong defensive plays. St. Pius X took control with some key hits to regain the lead. St. Mary's of Lancaster tried a comeback but the Padres' defense was too much. St. Pius X finished their inaugural season, 11-0.

Team New Era and Inferno Baseball will hold tryouts for 2008 elite travel baseball teams for boys ages 9-17 beginning Saturday, Sept. 22. For more information or to register, call Rich Wozniak at 681-3001 or visit www.infernobaseball.com. Registration deadline is Sept. 15.

Buffalo In-line Hockey Group will hold tryouts for all age groups for the fall house season on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the EPIC Center, 2793 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville.

Players with birth dates of Jan. 1, 1993 or younger will begin registration at 8:30 a.m. and tryouts will start at 9 a.m.

Players with birth dates of Jan. 2, 1993 or older will begin registration 9:30 a.m. and tryouts will start at 10 a.m. These are placement tryouts ($5 charge), as BIHG cuts no players.

The Buffalo Wings 12U travel baseball team will hold tryouts for the 2008 season at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Beverly Hills Park in Cheektowaga.

The rain date is at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at the same location.
