Student interns in Washington

Maura Kernan of Amherst was one of 60 students nationwide chosen for an internship in the U.S. Department of Labor's distinguished summer program in the nation's capital.

Kernan, a senior majoring in government and environmental studies at Hamilton College in Utica, was selected from a pool of more than 1,300 applicants.

The program provides exposure to the inner workings of the federal government and opportunities for hands-on research experience.

Throughout the course of her internship in the department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Kernan is working closely with staff members on duties related to workplace safety and health.
