Fitness expert hopes for national TV show
by JESSICA L. FINCH Associate Editor

Alessi
What does "the Rachel Ray of fitness" mean? Well to Derek Alessi, who is proposing a television show, "Dr. Fitness," it's bringing attention to the subject of fitness, the same as Ray did for food.

The owner of Alessi Fitness on Transit Road in East Amherst and author of "Lose Fat Forever," he wants to combine his knowledge of exercise and healthy eating into a television program.

Alessi has been appearing on the WKBW Channel 7 morning show as Dr. Fitness and has been meeting with agents to develop a national program.

"My goal is to combine everything into a nationally syndicated TV show," the Clarence resident said, adding that it would include the information from his books, current show and the general fitness programs he uses in his gym.

He said there is a need in the market for a health and fitness show.

Alessi has had some good news in recent months. Meeting with representatives from TV companies and producers, he said he is putting together a package to pitch his idea.

He has been involved in fitness since high school. When he attended Canisius College Alessi and a friend offered personal training, which became a business. That developed into his first gym on Delaware Avenue.

After a few more moves, he landed in East Amherst with a 10,000-square-foot structure.

Alessi, a certified fitness consultant, co-authored "Lose Fat Forever," with his brother, Don Alessi, Jr. The book was released in 2003. He is completing a third book, with the proposed title, "Bermuda Triangle Diet," which addresses fad diets. His first book "The Promise," was released in 2002.

In all his dealings, Alessi sticks to a simple formula for fitness:

1) Develop lean muscle tissue through weight training.

2) Do smart cardio training, no more than 30 minutes at one time.

3) Follow a nutritional diet of lean proteins, whole grains and green vegetables, six days a week.

"Stay consistent. Taking care of your body should be the same as brushing your teeth," he said, adding that nutrition and exercise should become a new way of a life - a habit.

His experience has been shared around the country, including through a 500-radio show tour. He has also been featured in magazines such as Men's Health and Maxim.

Taking his years of experience, Alessi will continue working toward his goal of having a national TV show where he will combine cooking, exercise and overall lifestyles changes.
