Fire causes $40,000 damage to home

A house fire in East Amherst was caused by improper use of gasoline, according to Amherst Fire Control.

East Amherst Fire Department, led by Chief Michael Morris, responded to 131 Shady Grove Drive at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The fire had started on a rear deck, and spread to a wall of a home and into the interior. The blaze was caused by vapors and dripping gasoline that had been used to start a fire in a pit.

Damaged is reported at $15,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents.

One resident was treated for minor burns on the arm and foot at the scene.

Swormville and Main Transit fire companies also responded.
