Lackawanna native and guitarist Mike Smiarowski's latest release, "Island Fantasy Part II: Return to Jabeam," will transport the listener from the craziness of life to a relaxing musical island resort.
As I recently reviewed the CD on a dreary, rainy morning, it sure lifted my spirits. But, it won't take a rainy day for the listener to appreciate this CD - it can be enjoyed anytime.
"Island Fantasy Part II" melds different musical styles, including easy listening jazz, adult contemporary, samba and others, and the playing is top-notch by Smiarowski and his musicians. With the island theme, I kept expecting to hear Jimmy Buffet throw in a lyric about tequila and "Margaritaville."
But this is an instrumental album of 10 Smiarowski compositions, featuring him on acoustic, classical and electric guitars. He is joined by Chas Eller on keyboards, Tony Markellis on fretless and fretted bass, Lucas Adler on drums and Brian Melick on percussion. The CD was recorded at Charles Eller Studios in Vermont.
"Carnival of Delight" is exactly what the title says: A musical delight that will get your toes tapping. "Cookin' Coconuts" reminded me of something from Chick Corea's Return to Forever's "Light as a Feather" album with a samba feel and memorable tune. "NIGHT" features Eller's fast, shimmering piano lines. "Tropical Romance" has an adult contemporary music sound and is highlighted by Smiarowski's melodic guitar.
"Maj-Noon Land" sparkles with Eller's piano work and Smiarowski's guitar. "Beach Serenade" features Smiarowski on the classical guitar in a pretty melody. "Memories of Jabeam" concludes the CD with a medium tempo calypso-like tune.
"Island Fantasy Part II: Return to Jabeam" was on the official ballot for the 2007 Grammy Awards in six categories.
