Leon Charles "Sid" Oberacker, 79, formerly of Amherst, who served the Sweet Home School District for 32 years as a music teacher, guidance counselor and later as assistant superintendent, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007.
Born in Buffalo, he attended Fredonia State College and the University at Buffalo. He also served in the U.S. Navy.
For the past 25 years, the Sid Oberacker Award has been given in his honor to an individual with exceptional dedication to school-community efforts.
After his retirement to Jupiter, Fla., Mr. Oberacker served as president of the Ocean Trail Homeowners Association.
He was an accomplished musician, an avid tennis player and a senior deacon at JupiterFIRST Church in Jupiter.
Mr. Oberacker is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie; three daughters, Lisa, Ellen and Lori; two sons, Glen and William; a sister, Betty; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, Aug. 12 in JupiterFIRST Church.
Arrangements were made by Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home.
