Police continue search for armed, cross-dressed bank robbers
At approximately 11:15 a.m. the Police Department received a 911 call from a bank employee who was in a second-floor office. The caller reported a lot of shouting and movement from the bank below her and said she believed it was being robbed. According to police, the men entered the bank and ordered everyone to the ground at gunpoint. Two handguns were displayed, a dark, long-barreled revolver and a dark semi-automatic pistol. One of the suspects jumped the counter and ordered the tellers to open their cash drawers. The second suspect was let into the teller area through the counter door. A third suspect remained by the door, keeping an eye on the bank employees. The money was placed in a dark-colored lawn bag, and the suspects fled the bank to a waiting black Chrysler M300 parked outside. Police believe a fourth suspect was driving the vehicle. The bag containing the money was discarded near Kensington Avenue and Mount Vernon after the dye packs exploded. All surrounding agencies were notified and given the description of the suspect vehicle. A short time later one of the Amherst patrols discovered the suspect's car abandoned at the corner of Burke Drive and Calderwood in Cheektowaga. A canvas of the neighbors revealed that the suspects were observed exiting the vehicle and walking down Calderwood toward the city of Buffalo. The car was returned to the Amherst Police Department's impound garage for examination. The vehicle had been reported stolen to Buffalo police on Thursday, being taken at gunpoint from the owner. Anyone with information regarding the robbery is asked to call the Amherst Police Department at 689-1341 or 689-1311. |
