My family had football games in the back yard, even in a foot of snow: dad and I versus my two brothers. Those days have since ended, but I always look forward to football season as much as any guy. College or professional doesn't matter to me. I flip around the TV, trying to catch the various games and yelling at the players, wishing they could hear me. While sometimes it's hard to be a Bills' fan, I stick by them and hope this year the team will "make me want to shout" in joy, instead of the usual frustration. • A WAY TO HONOR - A golf tournament was held recently in honor of a man who was dear to many residents. I asked those in charge of the tournament for more information, and this is what they shared. The tournament was held Aug. 5 at Glen Oak Golf Course to remember a great friend, Roger Scurci, who died of complications of juvenile diabetes in February 2007. He is survived by his parents, Dan and Lucy Scurci, his sister, Lisa, and his 100-year-old grandmother. Mr. Scurci was a graduate of Williamsville South in 1970 and was the president of two local companies, Dessert Deli and Pool Brite. As the turnout numbers show, 107 golfers and more than 150 people for dinner, he was a caring friend and loved by all. His friends Bill Hynes, Gary Adelman, Donna Ciminelli, Jack and Debby Struebing, and Jake Struebing began work on the tournament in March. What started as a small, low-key family event grew, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation became involved. Approximately $11,000, was raised, exceeding the goal by $6,000. • 50 YEARS - The Williamsville Central High School class of 1957 gathered for its 50th reunion at the end of July. Gathering at the Island Park pavilion, 95 people attended to reminisce. Returning to their hometown, attendees toured South High School and the Village Farmer's Market, and a group of 30 who attended Academy Street School from kindergarten through sixth grade toured the school, now called Christian Central Academy. The weekend, chaired by Donna Wershoven Welton, closed with a banquet at Marinaccio's on Saturday night and a brunch on Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. In addition to the students, three former teachers attended the event; Norma (Reggie) Mason, Rita Eichenger, both physical education teachers, and Bob Schaefer, mechanical drawing instructor. • CAN YOU HELP? OR PLAY? - The 22nd annual Amherst Youth Foundation Golf Classic will take place at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Fox Valley Club, 6161 Genesee St., Lancaster. Individual golfers, foursomes, prizes and donations are needed. All donations are tax-deductible. Proceeds benefit the Amherst Youth Board scholarship fund and the Amherst Youth Foundation. To sign up, donate or for information, call 631-7215 for Mark Johnston or Mary-Diana Pouli. This year's committee chairman is William Grunert, and members are Katherine McLernon, Mary Jane Hossmer, Michele Johnson and Nick Primerano. |
