New van donated for Town seniors Uniland Development Co. and the Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with Amherst Senior Transportation Services, Inc., have formed a partnership that has resulted in another van being made available for medical transportation for seniors in the Town of Amherst. The five-passenger van, in return for a $10,000 donation from Uniland to the Foundation, will feature Uniland's name on the outside. This van will take eligible Amherst seniors to physicians' offices and other medical facilities located within Erie County for the purpose of obtaining necessary medical or dental care. "Over the past 34 years Uniland Development Company has maintained a consistent commitment to invest in our community," said Carl Montante, president of Uniland. "While we can not fund every plea that comes before us, we are pleased to assist in providing this important service to senior citizens." Established in 1978, ASTS, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization with which the Town of Amherst contracts to provide senior van transportation. It is not a service directly administered by the Town. This service is intended to enhance the quality of life and promote independence for persons 55 and older. ASTS also provides transportation to and from the Amherst Center for Senior Services for eligible senior citizens residing in the Town. The ASTS Board sets reasonable fees to senior citizens using these services. Reservations can be made by calling ASTS at 636-3075. |
