Harrison Singer, 17, of Snyder, placed fifth in the country at the July 1 Future Business Leaders of America Awards of Excellence, held in Chicago.
Singer, an upcoming senior at Amherst Central High School, competed in Public Speaking II, in which 120 students from more than 60 states and territories took part. The awards ceremony concluded the June 28-July 1 conference, attended by more than 7,000, and was Web cast live around the world.
"It was a fabulous learning experience, and of course, an exhilarating moment. I was proud to be able to represent Western New York and my high school at this event. I'll never forget it," Singer said.
Singer qualified to compete in the national awards program by winning first at the regional level and second at the state competitive level event.
The award was part of a comprehensive competitive events program sponsored by Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda. Individuals and teams were encouraged to compete in any of the 50 different events, representing a wide range of activities and the business and leadership development focus of FBLA-PBL.
Also attending the conference and competing from Amherst High School were Matthew Krajna and Kai Zong. Business teacher John Himes is the students' advisor.
