After living in the same house for decades residents aren't always ready to leave when they have to.
As seniors reach an age or state of health when they can no longer stay in their homes, it can sometimes be hard to decide what to do next.
Christine Asztalos of Williamsville helps make the process easier through her business, Senior Moves, founded this past year.
Asztalos said each situation is different. Moving from a house to a nursing home or from one health care facility to another, each person needs personal attention.
"It's emotional for older people to move from their house they had been in for years," she said. "Sometimes they need somebody to assist them."
The services offered vary from Asztalos packing up belongings, and helping with the move, to setting up the person in a health care facility and organizing yard and estate sales.
One of the first decisions when moving is for the senior to decide what to keep, what to give away or donate and what can be sold. Asztalos can also serve as a liaison to family members not living in the immediate area.
She first heard of the industry on a radio program and started researching it. From there she founded Senior Moves and has been helping seniors and their families and working with health care facilities and Realtors as part of Network in Aging.
"It has been really rewarding, and fun," she said.
Asztalos added that she tries to make a sometimes traumatic experience easier. She assists with, preparing a home for resale, reducing clutter in storage areas, sorting and dispersing possessions and assisting with relocation and downsizing.
