125 Years Ago

Aug. 3, 1882

Farmers will soon commence threshing and to that end we would state that Messrs. Lucius Snearly and Chas. Summers, having purchased the Rothenburgh threshing machine and engine, and had the same thoroughly overhauled and put in complete order, and now prepared to take contracts.

Mrs. Jacob Shisler, who has been seriously ill, is improving. She was out for a short drive last week.

Mr. Andrew Herr and family of Clarence Center, visited Mr. Henry Brelos last Sunday.

The Eden Centre Preserving Company is running night and day and employing 150 hands. They are paying seven cents for black raspberries and nine cents for red raspberries, and 65 cents per bag for peas containing one and one-half bushels.

"'Is your house a warm one?' asked a man in search of a tenement. 'It ought to be; the painter gave it two coats recently,' replied the owner."

Aug. 1, 1907

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Kissinger were honored with a surprise party on July 25 in honor of their 25th wedding anniversary. The celebration was arranged by their daughters, Mrs. Andrew Cotton and the Misses Katharine and Margaret Kissinger.

75 Years Ago

Aug. 4, 1932

Through the dark clouds of depression, there was light breaking through this past week. That was when the Bank of Williamsville paid its regular quarterly dividend to stockholders. Ever since this bank began operating over fourteen years ago, dividends have been paid without interruption.

Sixty-five ballots were cast at the annual school meeting of the Williamsville High School District held in the school auditorium Tuesday evening, and each one went for the re-election of Trustees Dr. R.C. Herman and George J. Measer.

About seventy members and friends of the Snell family gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Metz of Williamsville on Sunday for their ninth annual reunion. Both dinner and supper were served on the well-kept lawn.

Manager Gilbert takes his Williamsville team to Clarence Center for a return go with Hank Garlock's crew in a game called for 6:45 Friday.

Help Wanted: "A position by a man 43 years old. Licensed driver, can drive any kind of truck or car. Call Williamsville 512."

Aug. 1, 1957

A Snyder resident, Dr. H.G. Sengbusch, participated in the nation's atomic test program in the Nevada desert. An associate professor of biology at the Buffalo State Teachers College, he volunteered for assignments in the radiation monitoring program under the Public Health Service.

Detective John Walsh of the Amherst Police has another headache - that of attempting to solve the seven burglaries which occurred Monday night at filling stations and a store in the Sheridan Drive-Niagara Falls Boulevard section. In all but one case, intruders broke open soft drink vending machines and stole the change in the coin boxes.

Carolyn Lehr, representing the Amherst-Williamsville Junior Olympic track team, was the only triple winner of the day in the meet held at Howe Field in Hamburg.

July 28, 1982

What's wrong with a bridge having a birthday? Nothing, according to Gartley Weller, president of the Williamsville Historical Society. He is determined to have a celebration honoring the 100-year-old bridge on Main Street over Ellicott Creek on Nov. 15, the date the bridge's age will reach 100.

Eggertsville and Snyder firefighters fought a fire in an unoccupied home early yesterday morning at the corner of Bailey Avenue and Brant Road.

The Williamsville Fire Department's first aid team won first place last weekend at the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Convention.

Red Broska had the Lee's Bar sluggers stymied, as the Blue Collar Inn blanked them 2-0 last Tuesday in Como Park.
