Mustangs go undefeated at Lew-Port tourney

Krasinski; second row - Nick Swain, Ryan Majewski, Dan Lumadue, Tyler Utz, Matt Whiting; third row - coaches Tony Swain, Sean Chambers, Dan Utz, John Whiting and Jason Majewski.
The Mathewson McCarthy 11U Mustangs defeated Lancaster-Depew, 12-1, in the finals of the Lewiston-Porter Baseball Classic. The Mustangs went 5-0 in the tournament.

Led by the strong arms of Nick Swain and Mike Keenehan, the Mustangs dominated Lancaster Depew from the opening pitch.

The offense proved to be just as energetic, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Steve Zaprowski and Brenden Chambers led off the game with back-to-back doubles, followed by Dan Lumadue's single to center to score Chambers. Ryan Majewski knocked one off the fence for a stand-up double, scoring another run. Matt Whiting followed with a double to left.

Tyler Utz's sharp eye forced a walk, allowing Ryen Seyfried and Keenehan's singles to complete the scoring.

Solid defense by Tom Krasinski, Doug Murphy and Brian Costello solidified the win.

The team's victory weekend left Swain with a 4-0 record.

The Mustangs started the weekend the same way they finished, beating Lancaster-Depew, 11-5.

Utz went 2 for 3 with five RBIs, including a monster three-run home run in the first inning. Majewski and Zaprowski each went 2 for 3. Swain's pitching notched the win, striking out four.

Keenehan earned the save. Murphy made a diving catch in right field to keep the game close.

The next day brought two Mustang wins, beating Hyde Park, 13-5, and routing Carnegie Scranton, 15-2. Leading the way against Hyde Park was Zaprowski's 4-for-4 outing with three runs scored. Utz and Lumadue each had a home run. Against Carnegie Scranton, Chambers led a 15-hit Mustang attack, going 3 for 3 with a grand slam. Swain went 2 for 4, and Costello hit 2 for 2.

The 15-3 semifinal win over Lewiston-Porter saw yet another strong offensive outing by the Mustangs. The Mustangs, led by Murphy (2 for 2, triple, two RBIs), Swain (3 for 4) and Majewski (home run to deep right center), made this a tough fight for the host team. Lumadue and Chambers were also 3 for 4, and Krasinski's two-run single in the fifth put the game away. Whiting and Keenehan both had strong outings on the mound.
