Tops Markets plans 5K Road Race to benefit JDRF

Tops Markets is lacing up its sneakers to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with the introduction of its first 5K Road Race.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at the National Fuel/Tops Complex at 6363 Main St., east of Youngs Road, in Williamsville. All proceeds from the race will benefit JDRF.

"We have been a proud supporter of JDRF for the past 14 years," said Max Henderson Jr., honorary race chairman and Tops Markets executive vice president and general manager. "One of our associates and an avid runner, Kathleen Graim, wanted to do something extra to continue supporting JDRF, and her idea for a 5K race will become a reality this August."

Preregistration is $18, and $20 on the day of the race. Checks must be made payable to JDRF and can be mailed to Tops Markets/JDRF 5K Race, Community Relations Department, P.O. Box 1027, Buffalo, NY 14240. Registration is 7:30 to 9 a.m. on race day.

The overall winner will receive a $100 Tops gift card. Additional gift cards at $50, $30 and $20 will be awarded to the top three in each age group. A postrace party will be held in the National Fuel/Tops Complex parking lot immediately following the race with an awards ceremony, door prizes, raffles, auctions and refreshments.
