Lou Gehrig wins Cal Ripken 10U District 1 championship

Lou Gehrig recently defeated Lancaster, 11-7, to win the Cal Ripken 10U District 1 Championship. Lou Gehrig moves to the Cal Ripken Division of Babe Ruth League's State Championship Tournament in Jamestown, N.Y.
In the championship game, Lou Gehrig jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead after two innings. Lou Gehrig scored three times in the first inning on two consecutive singles by Derek Penman and Salvatore LaTorre, followed by two batters getting on base with errors.
Lou Gehrig scored three more runs in the second on a walk, two consecutive singles by David Maher and Bryce Ferrell, a fielder's choice by Penman and a sacrifice fly by La- Torre.
Lancaster countered with four runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 6-6. Lancaster scored one more run in the top of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. This was the first time Lou Gehrig had been behind in any game in the tournament.
Lou Gehrig responded by scoring three runs in a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth on an error, a walk and a double by Owen Green followed by a single from Kevin Zachau.
Lou Gehrig scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth in another two-out rally, sparked by a single by Adam Tucker and a double by Ferrell.
Mitchell Spring took the mound for Lou Gehrig in the top of the sixth and shut out Lancaster to seal the victory.
Lou Gehrig's bats were smoking during the first three innings of the third game of the winners' bracket against Lancaster.
Lou Gehrig scored 10 runs on 10 hits to take a commanding 10-1 lead after 2.5 innings and won, 11-5.
Lou Gehrig scored four runs in the second inning on three consecutive doubles by Green, Jeffery Calderon, and Maher, a walk and a single by Tucker Weppner.
Lou Gehrig's hot bats carried over into the third inning, scoring another five runs sparked by three consecutive hits by Zachau (single), Green (double) and Calderon (single).
Lou Gehrig breezed through the second game of the winners' bracket, beating Cayuga, 8-1.
Zachau pitched the first four innings of shut-out ball, allowing a hit and a bunt while giving up a walk. Calderon pitched the final two innings, allowing only one run on two hits and a walk. Brendan Hurley cleanly fielded a line drive pop-up to second base to end the game.
Lou Gehrig scored eight runs on 10 hits and two walks. Green (3 for 3, triple, two singles), Penman, (2 for 3, triple, single), Ben Ritter (1 for 1, single) and Tucker (1 for 1, single) had hot bats.
Lou Gehrig opened the tournament with a convincing 6-2 victory over Hertel North Park. Green opened on the mound and pitched superbly, holding HNP scoreless for three innings on no hits while striking out four batters and allowing three walks.
Spring pitched the final three innings for Lou Gehrig, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out six batters and allowing one walk.
Lou Gehrig scored six runs on seven hits and six walks. Leading the offensive charge for Lou Gehrig was LaTorre with two hits, including a double, and Ferrell with two singles.
For the tournament, Lou Gehrig's team batting average was .348. Green (.545), Tucker (.500), Ritter (.500), La Torre (.455), Zachau (.417), Penman (.357), Calderon (.333) and Weppner (.300) were the team's top batters.
