Pending board approval, Brenner to be named Smallwood principal
      Pending approval by the Amherst Central Board of Education on July 11, Lydia A. Brenner and Tom Ferraina will have new positions in the Amherst Central School District. Brenner, the assistant principal of Amherst High School, has been named the new principal of Smallwood Drive Elementary.

      Amherst Highway crew members Dave Winzig, standing, and Greg Doll install a new caution sign on Sargent Drive on June 27. The sign alerts drivers of 8-year-old Sawyer Aston, an autistic child who lives on the street. It's the first sign of with such a message in Western New York.

Fourth of July celebration planned at UB
      Independence Day events are to be held at the University at Buffalo North Campus on Wednesday, July 4. The evening will start with "The Boomers" performing at 7 p.m., followed by the Erie County Wind Ensemble at 8:45 p.m. Fireworks will follow the last concert at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Audit shows 2006 budget was short

      An audit by Drescher and Malecki found that the Town of Amherst's 2006 budget was short $921,000, but a one-time credit from the state for $3 million kept the town from having a financial gap. Comptroller Frank Belliotti said there was no "particularly bad news" for the town from the audit.

Tournament yields local winners
