Tree is living proof survival is possible May I make a case for the many loyal and damaged trees in our community? As an example, a most spectacular magnolia tree graced our front yard for more than 20 years, and when she blossomed last spring, spectators from far and wide drove by to enjoy the exquisite blossoms. Then came Oct. 12 and this elegant and tall mass of exotica was suddenly felled to the ground, the branches broken and scattered over the fiercely driven snow. Tree experts who had biyearly sprayed her, gave her little hope of continued life. But "Maggie" fooled everyone. Now only a fourth of her previously majestic self, she has sprouted a host of luscious green leaves, which are as crisp and healthy as ever before. So, please learn from my stubborn magnolia and give our faithful Amherst trees, who have given us years of beauty and protection, a second chance. If they are not dead or hazardous to our safety, let them experience yet another spring. Like Maggie, they could surprise us all. Eve M. Klipfel Snyder |
