Amherst Lazio captures Odenbach Cup tourney title

The Amherst Lazio BU14 continued their winning ways by winning the Odenbach Cup played on Father's Day weekend at the West Seneca Soccer Complex. Lazio outscored their opponents in the tournament, 16-3.

The first test for Lazio was the Alden Eliminators but the Lazio easily won, 6-1. Brad Anderson and Johnny Reeb scored two goals each. Phillip Galbo and Matt Nesper also tallied goals. Goalie Adam Janiszewski earned the win in net.

The second game saw Lazio beat the Tritown Mustangs, 5-0. Jon Cordero scored two goals and Henry Edwards, Galbo and Brandon Maranto each had one goal. Brian Corretore and Janiszewski shared netminding duties.

Amherst continued their strong play on Sunday, defeating the Northtowns Warriors, 3-1. Reeb's two goals and Edwards' single tally were the team's goal scorers.

In the championship game, the Lazio went head-to-head with the Northtowns Red Raiders, earning a 2-1 victory. Goals were scored by Reeb and Paul Boerema.

Tournament MVP Zack Sorci led the strong core of defenders. including C.A. Beutel, Matt Radel, Brad Anderson and Max Roehmholdt. Midfielders Boerema, Reeb, Nick Helmick, Nesper, Chris Russo, Edwards and Maranto dominated the center of the field and disrupted many attacking attempts by the opponents.

Forwards Galbo, Cordero and Stephen Fitzmaurice frustrated opposing defenders all weekend. Janiszewski and Corretore shared goaltending duties and held their opponents to less then a goal per game.
