THEY'RE GREAT - The Saint Gregory the Great girls varsity 'A' softball team finished 9-1 to win the Diocesan Northtowns league crown. The Cougars earned the top seed of their division for the Diocesan playoffs and defeated Orchard Park's Nativity, 13-5, and SS. Peter and Paul of Williamsville, 17-0, before losing 3-2 to undefeated St. John the Baptist in the semifinals. The team scored 135 during the season and allowed only 56. Team leaders were Margaret Christ, Caroline Neiderpruem and Megan Niesyty (home runs), Hannah O'Sullivan (RBIs), Claire Mangano (stolen bases), Maggie Kreuz (base hits), Jenny Helfer, Emily Gorney, Maria Giangreco and Lucia LoTempio (defensive fielding), Katy Diekman (catching duties) and pitcher Krissy Russo (led team and league in strikeouts).
