CHAMPIONS - For the first time in the 21st century, a nonpremier soccer club won the state championship, as the Delaware Soccer Club U13 girls team defeated the defending champion Syracuse Football Club, 5-1, to earn the right to represent New York in the regional championships in Maine. Along the way, Delaware SC tied the Rochester Jr. Rhinos (1-1) and beat Buffalo United Elite (3-0). Amherst residents helped the team win. Jenny Piaggione scored the goal that launched the team's comeback in the championship game. Zoe Jackson-Gibson and Lexi Kroese were anchors of the defense at outside fullback. Lexi Pace and Aba Fynn-Aikens helped generate offense. Goalie Erin Ballou allowed two goals.
