Lou Gehrig Kendal Rehak and Abby Welch each scored three runs and Julia Meyer went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Lou Gehrig Major "A" softball White Sox to a thrilling 14-12 win over the Diamondbacks last week at Lou Gehrig. Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Chelsea Bennett scored for the Diamondbacks on an RBI single by Emma Davis and Welch scored for the White Sox on an RBI single by Clare Ahern. The Diamondbacks added two runs in the second with Lea Cutler scoring one of her two runs but the White Sox answered with scores by Rehak and Welch to keep the game tied at three runs apiece. After the Diamondbacks scored in the top of the third, the White Sox scored five runs to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth inning. Ahern led off with a triple to the outfield fence and Julia Gaglio, Rachel Kieffer, Heather Hurley, and Rehak all followed with singles and ended up scoring. Shannon Mc- Nulty and Meyer collected RBIs. However, the Diamondbacks roared back with three runs in the fourth when Isabelle Gidwitz, Adrianna Soucy, and Bennett led off with consecutive singles and scored. They then held the White Sox to a single run by Welch to close the gap to 9-7 after four innings. In the fifth, the Diamondbacks had six consecutive hits and scored five runs to take a 12-9 lead. The White Sox came to bat in the bottom of the fifth knowing it may be their final at-bat, and the bottom half of the batting order delivered in a big way. Rehak started the rally with her third hit of the game. Brooke McKinnon followed with a single and McNulty advanced the runners with a hit to the right side. Julia Meyer followed with her third hit of the night and scored the winning run on an RBI single by Welch. Elena Kotrides then knocked in Welch to collect the final RBI. Amanda Greenwald was three for three and turned in two outstanding defensive plays for the White Sox. |
