Amherst Girls Softball
'Major' Devil Rays beat Orioles, Diamondbacks

The "Major" Devil Rays recently won two Amherst Girls Softball games.

Devil Rays 12, Orioles 3

The Devil Rays beat the Orioles 12-3 in five innings.

Rachel Gewurz, Desi Vollmar and Carly Butt each had two hits. Callan Smith and Marley Talvite each added a hit.

The Orioles were led by Sabrina Lipowski's two hits. Haley Stogsdill, Morgan Allender, and Kristina Sosnowski helped the offense with a hit apiece.

Devil Rays 5, Diamondbacks 4

The Devil Rays narrowly beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4.

The Devil Rays offense was led by Desi Vollmar's two hits and hits by Rachel Gewurz, Alyssa Presutti, Morgan Mathien and Dana Macchia.

The Diamondbacks were led by Natalie Senia and Erin Belile, who each had a hit. Devil Ray pitchers Rachel Gewurz and Alyssa Presutti struck out 18 batters. Diamondback pitchers Emily Martin and Kat Scima combined for 13 strikeouts.

Braves 10, Angels 10

The Braves and Angels played a great game that featured clutch rallies by both teams and ended after seven innings in a 10-10 tie.

The Angels jumped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings only to see the Braves battle back with five runs in the fourth inning that included a bases-loaded, two-run single by Megan Schleicher.

Down 8-6 going into the top of the seventh and last inning, the Braves scored four runs with Schleicher again providing the key hit with another bases loaded, two-run double with two outs that gave the Braves a 10-8 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Angels were down to their last out with one runner on when they got a walk and a clutch two-run double by Bayle Cruz to dramatically tie the game at 10-10.

With the potential winning run on third base, the Braves made a good defensive play to preserve the tie. Besides her clutch double, Bayle Cruz also had two other hits and drove in a total of six runs.

Megan Kerr, Laura Zaprowski and Kelly Stockman also had two hits apiece for the Angels.

The Braves' offense was led by Schleicher, Jane Truedale (on base in all four at-bats), Anna Heintzman and Ashley MacComber.

The pitching was excellent for both teams with Stockman and Krista Rasey pitching well for the Angels and MacComber and Catherine O'Brien pitching equally well for the Braves.

' AAA'

Mudcats 9, Blue Claws 2

The Mudcats closed out the season on a six-game win streak, defeating the Mudcats, 9-2. The Mudcats finished 9-3.

The Mudcats played a strong game with great pitching, tough play in the field, and an opportunistic offense. Laura Matthews pitched two innings, allowing only one earned run for the third straight game and had a crushing triple in the second inning. Gabi Smith pitched two innings, allowing only one run and had two hits at the plate.

Samantha Klinkman and Alexa Jodoch each had a long hit into the outfield. Jessie Rohl went 3 for 3 for the Mudcats, who also got key hits and RBIs from Angel Criden, Haley Ernst, Samantha Fenter, and Allison Fenter.

All eight girls backed up their pitchers with great team defense.

The team was coached by head coach Craig Fenter with assistant coaches Jeff Criden, Daryl Ernst, Jeff Ruhl, and Don Klinkman. The Mudcats also included Katie Arthur, Anna Kistner, Jennifer Miranda, and Michelle Miranda, who couldn't make the last game.

Majors

Angels 22, Devil Rays 8

The Angels scored eight runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game and lead to a 22-8 win over the Devil Rays.

Laura Zaprowski led the offense with a triple and three singles and Blair Pembleton, Rachael Nasca and Kelly Stockman each had two hits apiece for the Angels.

The Angels also received solid pitching from Zaprowski, Stockman, Krista Rasey and Jessica Lynett.

The Devil Rays received excellent pitching from Alyssa Presutti and Rachael Gewurz and solid defense from Carly Butt.

The Devil Rays offense was led by Marley Talvite and Desi Vollmer, who had two hits apiece and Grace Phillips, who scored two runs.
