Amherst's Jones sets school record at states

Willie Jones led all Town of Amherst entrants at last weekend's New York State Public High School Athletic Association at Dietz Memorial Stadium in Kingston, N.Y.

The Amherst Central senior leaped a school-record 6-9 to place third in the boys triple jump. Jones will run in an outdoor national Nike meet this weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

The other only Town of Amherst boy entrant was Williamsville North senior Matt Losi, who high-jumped 19-6.5 for 15th place.

Jones was not the only person from Amherst Central to attend states. Freshman Brenna Symoniak finished 13th in the Division I 3000-meters in a personal-best 10:19.20 and teammate Allison Rogers, a sophomore, took 15th in the Division I 200-meter dash prelims in 26.60 and 16th in the 100-meter dash prelims in 12.85.

"I can't be up upset with anything Brenna or Allison did over the weekend because they will have an opportunity to go to states for the next few years," said Amherst coach Dan Tryon. "The way these two girls ended is proof we have a good future and a bright program in the making."

In the Division I girls' 100 hurdles, Williamsville North junior Sarah Mikulski and Williamsville South freshman Allie Van Buren took 11th (15.80) and 13th (15.88) place, respectively.
