South softball's state title quest falls short Williamsville South's quest for their third New York State Championship in four years fell short as they lost a heartbreaking 2-0 decision to Section V's Victor in the Class A Far West Regional on Wednesday, June 6 at Brockport State College. It was South's third regional loss at Brockport State, also losing in 2003 and 2005. The years in between, South won New York State titles. South had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the second inning. Sam Strapason hit a two-out double to right center field but was left stranded at second base. Defensively, Chelsea Plimpton took a no-hitter with nine strikeouts into the sixth. Plimpton struck out the first batter before Victor freshman Michelle Prong hit a one-out double. The Lady Blue Devils added singles by Kaitlin Dolan and Alyssa Lepore to plate both Victor runs. Plimpton tried to start a Lady Billie rally in the seventh with a one-out single to left field but was unable to score. Victor's Erin Nargi fired a two-hitter with eight strikeouts. South finished 27-2 and this season won their tenth straight league championship and fifth straight sectional championship and Depew Tournament title. South will start next year with a 59 game league win streak and 58 straight home wins. Victor went on to lose to eventual state champion, South Glens Falls of Section II, 2-0, in eight innings, in the Class A state semifinals on Saturday, June 9. |
