Amherst Girls Softball
'Major' White Sox win big over Phillies, Cubs

The Amherst Girls Softball "Major" White Sox defeated the Phillies, 13-3, in a great team effort.

Pitcher Audrey Yu pitched three strong innings and contributed with singles of her own. Clare Costello pounded out two doubles and scored twice for the White Sox. Michelle Haumesser had a single and struck out four batters in two innings, however, her diving catch at shortstop to end the fourth inning was a defensive highlight for the team.

Pitcher Tori Mendiola recorded four strikeouts in her two innings on the mound. She singled and was able to cross the plate once. Abbey Staebell played great at first base and singled to help the team offensively.

The great defense continued with Lara Macdonald at third base as she was able to easily throw out a batter. Macdonald also added two singles throughout the game.

Joslin Downey had another good game batting as she singled twice and scored three runs. Claire Haumesser hit the ball hard as she legged out a triple and scored once. Ashley Cultrara and Bobbi Walls each singled and Cultrara was able score for the White Sox. Julie Brady ran the bases well and was able to cross the plate for another White Sox run.

Alli Ferenczy pitched very well for the Phillies. She helped herself with a single and RBI as well as crossing the plate once for the Phillies.

Ally Brace provided great defense at shortstop by throwing out one runner and catching another fly ball. Molly Kurzanski singled and scored once as well as played great at first base.

White Sox 15, Cubs 3

Pitchers Tori Mendiola and Michelle Haumesser did an outstanding job limiting the Cubs to just three runs. Michelle Haumesser led the team defensively with seven strikeouts in three innings on the mound and scored twice while going 2 for 3 at the plate. Joslin Downey led the team in hitting by producing three hits on three appearances at the plate and scored twice. Claire Haumesser and Lara Macdonald each went 2 for 3.

Claire Haumesser crossed the plate twice and Macdonald was able to score an additional run.

Mendiola helped herself by crossing the plate three times.

Finally, good base running by Clare Costello and Ashley Bogan produced an additional five runs. Costello crossed the plate three times and Bogan scored another two runs to help the White Sox win the game.

White Sox 7, Marlins 2

The White Sox outscored the Marlins in an exciting game. Claire Haumesser and Joslin Downey led the White Sox offensively. Claire Haumesser was 3 for 4 at the plate, included two timely doubles. Downey was able to score twice after going 3 for 4 while nearly hitting for the cycle. Downey had a single, double and triple.

Pitcher Michelle Haumesser helped herself by scoring two runs. In the four innings on the mound, she struck out eight Marlins.

Tori Mendiola contributed six strikeouts in the three innings she pitched. In addition, she was 2 for 4 at the plate and scored two runs.

West 11, East 9

With the bases loaded and the tying run on second base in the bottom of the last inning, West pitcher Tory Trzyna caught a sharply hit line drive to end an East rally and preserve a thrilling 11-9 win over the East in the annual Majors division all-star game.

The game featured five lead changes as well as excellent hitting and defense. Offensively, the West was led by Bayle Cruz, Krista Rasey, Chelsea Loomis, Merrisa Loos, and Kelly Stockman who all had two hits apiece as well as Megan Kerr and Michelle Lonski, who had key hits.

Defensively, the West received solid pitching from Trzyna, Rasey and Laura Zaprowski as well as great defense from Lisa Harb and Kelly Farrell.

The East was led offensively by Michelle Haumesser, Jessica Lawson, Madline Marsack, Claire Haumesser, Molly Kursanski, Catherine O'Brien, Alyssa Presutti, Megan Schleicher, and Tori Mendiola who all had hits. The East also received solid pitching from Presutti, Mendiola and Michelle Haumesser.

Devil Rays 13, Orioles 1

Pitchers Rachel Gewurz and Alyssa Presutti combined to throw a no-hitter, walking only two batters and striking out 10. Alyssa Presutti had a hot bat going 3 for 4. Carly Butt, Rachel Gewurz and Desi Vollmar each added a hit to the Devil Rays offense.

Braves 9, Devil Rays 1 Jenny Gilbert led the Braves' offensive output plating two runs. Becca Deschner, Julia Lynch, and Catherine O'Brien, Jane Truesdell, and Anna Heintzman each added a run to lead the Braves to victory.

The Devil Rays' ace hurler Alyssa Presutti provided precision perfect pitching, including 10 strikeouts. Grace Phillips scored the only run for the Devil Rays.

Braves 20, Phillies 5

Jessica Lawson hammered out back-to-back home runs to lead the Braves' bats to victory. Megan Schleicher added a run and provided dynamite defense. Catherine O'Brien and Ashley MacComber combined for 12 strikeouts.

Anna Heintzman slammed a single into center field.

The Phillies' offense received runs from Emily Marcus, Ali Ferenczy, and Molly Kurzansky.

' AAA'

Mudcats 13, Sidewinders 10

Led by the fielding and pitching of Samantha Klinkman, the Mudcats improved to 4-3 on the season with a 13-10 win over the Sidewinders.

Klinkman pitched the fifth inning for the win and made three outs in the field.

Starting pitcher Laura Matthews pitched two strong innings and also played well in the field. Katie Arthur, Haley Ernst, Allison Fenter, Alexa Jodach, Anna Kistner, Jennifer Miranda, and Jessie Rohl all played well at the plate.

The Mudcats had some nice plays in the field as well as behind the plate from Angel Criden, Samantha Fenter, and Gabi Smith.

The Sidewinders got big hits from Sarah Drmota and Katy Lessing. Rosie Drozda starred in the field and Tiana Hunter performed well in her pitching debut.

Thunder 13, Lookouts 2

Playing under the lights, the Thunder brought their "A" game against the Lookouts. Solid pitching from Allison Balk, Kimberly Brace, and Emilee Foster kept the Lookouts at bay, most of the game. Defensive gems throughout the game and key hits from a number of players helped secure the victory.

The Lookouts have some great fielding plays of their own. Victorianna Boggio made an excellent catch on a line drive at first base and Julianne Pezzino caught a fly ball in the outfield and doubled up a Thunder runner on second base. Colleen Doyle came in and pitched a great third inning, striking out three Thunder batters.

But the evening belonged to the Thunder. Morgan Maley, catching behind the plate, made a super heads-up play catching a pop foul ball for a key out. Late in the game, Foster, playing shortstop, had a great defensive play, effectively squelching a potential rally by the Lookouts. With a runner on first, she snared a line drive and fired a bullet to Brace, at first, catching the runner trying to tag up, for an inning-ending double play.

Mia Martin also had a great play. On a hard grounder to third base, she came up with the ball and threw to second, getting the runner coming from first base.

Knights tie Storm

The Knights' Alia Zeid dominated the bottom of the second inning with three outs at first base. She was followed by an amazing pop fly catch and double play at third base by Kaylyn Wertz in the bottom of the third.

The team put forth tremendous effort with solid hits and hustle displayed by Olivia Rinaldo, Jennie Kingsley, Nicole Pierino, and Abby Nerogic.

The Storm challenged the Knights in the first inning with a solid hit to secure first base by Jenny Pierce and with terrific stops and throws by pitcher Emily Quarterly.

In the second inning, Christine Aguglia ran up to grab the ball, making the third out at first base.

In the third, Jenessa Preston stopped a hard hit and threw to Stacey Brown for an out at second. It was followed by Nicole Stuber, who caught a pop fly for the third out in the fourth.

Bats 20, Knights 14

Cheryl Moehrle and Reena Gerakios were the top hitters for the Knights. Melissa Wolf, Nora Marris, and Theresa Gerth sparked the offense for the Bats with some fine hitting.

In the field, Isabel Lynch and Angela Gerth turned in some fine defensive plays for the Bats while Cosette Nerogic had some stellar plays from the Knights' catching position. Knight Mary Crumlish combined some great hitting and fine fielding.

'Minor'

River Cats tie Muck Dogs

The River Cats tied the Muck Dogs in a hard-fought game. Grace Couche, Haley Cutting, and Emma Donaldson all made great plays in the field while Megan Leczinsky, Natalie Marinides, and Emily Wanamaker were great at bat.

' A'

Metz vs. Rockhounds

The Metz' Elizabeth Charles, Alli Kingsley, Allison Farber, Maddie Farber, Emily Schule, and Emily Segal did a great job at the plate.

The Metz were led defensively by Victoria Bogucki, Isabella Bogucki, Deanna Disblasi and Jenna Lukomski in the field by making terrific plays on the pitching mound, shortstop, second base, and first base to obtain three outs in the first inning.

The Rockhounds were equally as efficient at hitting and on the field with Allie Calder, Katie Flemming, Chloe Hurrell, Julia Maines, Hanna Pawlowski, Jordan Preston, Charlotte Ryan, and Abigail Ward.
