Sports briefs Sister Maria Pares' 2007 basketball camp for girls in grades 3-8 will be held this summer at Sacred Heart Academy, 3860 Main St., Buffalo. The first session is June 25-29. The second session is July 9-13. The camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $150 per session and $275 for both. For more information, call Maria Shantler at 632-6387. Maura Frauenhofer of Williamsville has committed to run cross country for Canisius College for the 2007-08 season. Frauenhofer ran cross country for two seasons at Nardin Academy, where she was named first-team All-Catholic after her junior campaign. She's also earned four letters as a member of the school's track and field team where she's competed in the state championship meet in two separate events. Melina (Mimi) Hong was one of five University of Rochester women's lacrosse players who have earned All-Liberty League honors. Hong, an Amherst High School graduate, has started every game of her college career on defense - a string of 49 games. In 2007, she had 25 ground balls, caused 12 turnovers and won 11 draw controls. She scored five goals and set up two others. Rochester was 5-9 overall in 2007. The Yellowjackets were 3-5 in the Liberty League and finished tied for fifth place with St. Lawrence. Dana Webb, a Williamsville South High School graduate and Amherst resident, was named as a second team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West softball selection. Webb is a sophomore second baseman for Edinboro University. Erie Community College's Kristie Schneegold, a Williamsville South graduate and Amherst resident, was named to the Western New York Athletic Conference's All-Conference softball team. Schneegold, a freshman, was the team's starting third baseman and saw time on the mound as well. A workout camp will be held this summer at Medaille College, 18 Agassiz Circle, Buffalo. The camp will be run in small groups (no more than four campers at a time) and focus on areas the camper wants to improve. Tonawanda High School will host a wrestling camp with Hofstra University coach Tom Shifflet and staff July 18-20. Shifflet, a Sweet Home High School graduate, led the Hofstra Pride to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships in March. Hilbert College is seeking an individual to fulfill a graduate assistant position within the athletic department beginning August 1, 2007 and ending May 31, 2008. The qualified person would work more specifically in the sports information department while also assisting with academic mentoring, game management, orientation, fundraising activities, and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. The graduate assistant must be willing to work anywhere from 35 to 40 flexible hours per week, including weekends and especially on Mondays. The position comes with a stipend and reimbursement toward graduate tuition as well as hands-on experience. Hilbert College will be holding its 2007 summer basketball camps from from June 24 to 28 and July 15 to 19 (girls), and from July 8 to 12 and July 22 to 26. Registration will take place each Sunday (the first day of camp) from 2 to 4 p.m., and each camp ends at 3 p.m. Thursday. Registration completed prior to June 1, however, will result in a $15 discount. Campers are given the choice of staying on campus (resident camper) or commuting (day camper). Day camps run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekly. The cost for each week is $340 for resident campers and $250 for day campers; all meals are included in the cost. Groups of six or more receive an additional $10 discount. In addition, a $5-per-child family discount is available. All campers will receive a personal evaluation, reversible jersey, camp T-shirt, and their own basketball, along with individual instruction that will include an emphasis on shooting and offensive skills. Medaille College men's basketball coach Mike McDonald will host two weeks of basketball camps for boys' ages 6 to 14 at Medaille College, 18 Agassiz Circle, Buffalo. The sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 to 29 and July 30 to August 3. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available each day. The camp also includes games, contests, and instruction. All campers will receive a "Maverick Pack", which includes a reversible jersey, T-shirt, basketball, and a gym sack. The cost of the camp is $200. Family and team discounts are available. For more information, call 880-2347. Joy Denzak (44-11-33) shot the best score for the Sheridan Park Friday Golf Club A Flight Friday, edging out Barb Smith (47-12-35) and Peggy Nogaro (48-13-35). In the B Flight, Marion Mingle (50-15-35) took first, followed by Marian Reo (50-14-36) and Barb Corrigan (52-16-36). In the C Flight, Thelma Frauenhofer (48-18-31) won, while Elsie Schreiber (51-18-33) and Dot Brigante (53-17-36) took second and third, respectively. In the D Flight, Pat Aldrich (55-21-34) took first, followed by Mary Lou Harms (58-24-34) and Marie Sullivan (58-24-34). |
