Avenue of Athletes
Students honored for work on field, classroom, community

Battaglia
The 2007 edition of the Amherst Avenue of Athletes will be held at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 13 at the Amherst Pepsi Center, 1615 Amherst Manor Dr., Amherst. The event highlights high school boy and girl seniors in the Town of Amherst who have excelled in athletics, academics and in the community. Three adult selections will be announced in next week's Bee.

Amherst Central

Jodi Battaglia

Battaglia participated in volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse for four years.

She started as an outside hitter on the varsity volleyball team and was team captain and team MVP in her senior year.

In basketball, she started all four years at point guard where she dished out over 377 assists and grabbed 440 career rebounds.

In lacrosse, she set a school-record her sophomore year with 62 goals and broke it in her junior year with 65. This past season, she scored her 200th career goal as she led the team to their third ECIC championship and fourth straight Section VI title.

Gowen
She's also a high honor student and a member of the National Honor Society and contributed in a number of extracurricular activities at Amherst, including Pathfinder, a student leadership group, and Spanish Club. She was also recognized as the school's most outstanding multi-sport athlete.

She'll attend University at Albany on a lacrosse scholarship.

Will Gowen

Gowen was a key player on Amherst's soccer, basketball, and baseball teams.

Gowen was a two-year letter winner on varsity soccer at defense and was recipient of the Coach's Award and named as an ECIC Division III second team all-star. He also was a two-year letter winner in basketball, helping the team to the ECIC Division II championship. He was honored as Amherst's outstanding male all-around basketball player. He excelled the most in baseball, leading the team in almost every offensive category and playing shortstop and outfield.

Gowen is also a talented musician, playing percussion in the school's wind ensemble and the drums in the jazz band. In his spare time, he volunteers at the Harlem-Kensington Neighborhood Association for cleanups and work days.

Reese
Gowen will attend Hamilton College next fall where he hopes to play baseball.

Park School of Buffalo

Andrea Reese

Reese has been a member of Park varsity sports since her freshman year.

She has been an active participant in varsity basketball and was co-captain her senior year. She has been named to the Independent Athletic Conference first team the last two years.

Reese was also an active participant in varsity soccer for four years, serving as co-captain the last two years. For the last three years, she has received IAC first team honors. Reese made MVP her senior year and All-WNY the last two years.

Reese received the Clarkson University High School Leadership Award her junior year and was also nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.

She will be attending Utica College in the fall where she'll major in mathematics education and play basketball.

Steven Dick

Dick has participated in many sports at Park over the years, including varsity lacrosse, soccer, and tennis.

Dick
He was captain of the soccer team and earned MVP and Independent Athletic Conference first team award during his senior year. Other awards he won include the Emedco academics excellence award and the Crystal Bison award.

Ranked second in his class, Dick has been involved at Park in Model UN and mock trial and is treasurer of his class.

He also takes an active role in the community as a member of the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

He plans to study biology at Geneseo State College.

Sacred Heart

Alison Pyszczynski

Pyszczynski was able to combine her excellent athletic talents with the rigors of academics and excel in both.

Pyszczynski ranks near the top of her graduating class and excelled in softball and volleyball. In softball, Pyszczynski was named All-Catholic second team her sophomore year, first team as a junior, and first team and league MVP in her senior year. She was also selected as a scholar athlete in both sports.

Pyszczynski has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years, a Sacristan for two years, and a member of the Ecology Club and Service Club for three years.

Pyszczynski will attend Cornell University in the fall.

Sweet Home

Krista Prentice

Prentice has exhibited outstanding athletic and academic talents.

Prentice helped Sweet Home to two straight Section VI Class A championships and was named team MVP in her senior year. Prentice also earned All-New York State, All-Western New York, and All-ECIC honors, as well as numerous tournament recognitions.

She's also been a member of the varsity softball team for three years, serving as captain this past season and receiving ECIC honorable mention.

Prentice is a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and is ranked 15th in a class of 290.

She will be attending LeMoyne College in the fall where she will major in chemistry and play volleyball.

Prentice
Eric Schnirel

Schnirel is an athlete in its truest form.

Schnirel has participated three years on varsity soccer (twice named first team all-league), varsity basketball (member of Section VI Class AA team, ECIC Division I honorable mention), and varsity lacrosse (captain, all-league).

Despite playing three sports, Schnirel has maintained a 98 average. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. He was also named an All-WNY Scholar Athlete in the winter and was a United States Army All-American Scholar Athlete.

Schnirel is ranked 25th in his class of 290. He will attend Medaille College in the fall where he will major in business management and finance and play basketball and soccer.

Williamsville East

Molly Bojanek

Bojanek has been a three-sport athlete at East, participating in soccer, basketball, and softball.

She played soccer for six years and started the last four years at goalie. She helped East teams over the years to a record of 67-8-8 and this season to an Adidas National Soccer Coaches Association of America ranking of first in the East and sixth in the nation.

Schnirel
She holds single-season school records for goals against (seven), goals against average (.37) and career goals against average (.51) and shutouts (48).

She also started on varsity softball since eighth grade and was a captain her junior and seniors years on the basketball team, leading East to two ECIC titles and a sectional title.

Her extra curricular activities include peer educators, challenge club, student leadership forum, and coaching youth soccer and basketball.

Bojanek will be attending Fredonia State College where she will major in education and play soccer.

Zach Miller

Miller has accomplished as much as a student and athlete can at East.

In his four years, Miller earned ten varsity letters in three sports and served as captain of the varsity football and baseball teams.

He also started four years on East's "A" boys bowling team, scoring a 254 high game and 646 high series.

In baseball, he was a three-year starting third baseman and pitcher and captained East's 2007 ECIC Division II championship team. He finished his varsity career on the mound 12-0.

He was a three-year starter on the football team at fullback and linebacker. A severe knee injury in his junior year threatened his athletic career. After two operations and six months of rehabilitation, Miller was named Section VI Class A North league co-offensive Player of the Year.

His academic achievements are many, most notably a perfect 800 on the Math SAT and a perfect 36 on the ACT. He is ranked in the top 10 percent of his class.

Miller will attend Michigan State University and will major in accounting at the Honors College.

Williamsville North

Jill Piaggione

For the past five years, Piaggione has earned 10 varsity letters in three sports and was captain of the soccer and basketball teams.

Piaggione started on the varsity soccer team as an eighth grader, leading the Lady Spartans to three ECIC Division I championships and two Section VI Class AA titles. At the center midfielder, she was a three-time ECIC I all-star and was twice named an All-Western New York honorable mention.

A true scholar-athlete, she is ranked 12th in a class of 366 students with a 96 average while completing nine Advanced Placement courses. She's also a member of student council, steering committee, and president of the National Honor Society.

Piaggione also finds the time to serve as a junior volunteer at Children's Hospital and volunteered for Rep. Thomas Reynolds (R-Amherst).

Piaggione will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point next year and will play soccer.

Ryan Geary

Geary's tenacious play and love of competition has made him one of the most decorated athletes to ever graduate from North.

Between ice hockey and lacrosse, Geary has earned eight varsity letters.

Geary led North hockey to a 90-16-11 record, two New York State Championships, a state runner-up, one Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation title, and three Federation Division I regular season titles. Geary is North's all-time leading scorer. He was New York State Player of the Year in 2006.

As the faceoff man for the lacrosse team, Geary was selected as an ECIC honorable mention for three years.

Geary also maintains a 92 average and is vice-president of student council. He was also selected homecoming king.

Geary plans to play junior hockey next year in either the Midwest or Canada then continue his education and hockey career in college.

Williamsville South

Chelsea Plimpton

Plimpton has been a two-sport athlete at South but her greatest success has been achieved on the mound for the softball team.

Over her five-year career, she has recorded over 105 wins and only lost six times. She's the all-time state record-holder in strikeouts, holds the single-season state strikeout record, as well as state records for career perfect games and shutouts. Her efforts have garnered her All-Western New York, All-New York State and national honors.

Plimpton was also a three-year starter on the varsity volleyball team, earning All-ECIC honors.

Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society.

She will continue her education and play softball at Division I St. John's University.

Frank Pieri

Pieri has been a three-sport athlete at South, participating in baseball, basketball, and volleyball.

In volleyball, Pieri led the Billies to the Section VI finals and was named to the ECIC Division II all-league team.

In basketball, he was instrumental in helping South reach the section finals.

Pieri's best showing came in baseball. As a three-year starter, Pieri has pitched in some of the biggest games in the history of South baseball.

In his junior year, Pieri hit and pitched South to the New York State Class A final, including a no-hitter in the state semifinal. He finished his career with three no-hitters.

Plimpton
Pieri was named to the All-ECIC, All-Western New York, and New York State first teams.

Pieri will continue his education at the University at Buffalo where he will play baseball.
