East's season ends in extra innings

The Section VI Class A quarterfinal game between Williamsville East and Dunkirk on Tuesday, May 29 was so evenly matched that it needed an extra inning to decide the outcome.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Dunkirk's Katie Dimmer turned a single into a triple and Tiara McCall hit a bloop single into shallow left center field that bounced off a glove to plate her for the only run of the game as the Lady Marauders eliminated the Lady Flames, 1-0.

It was a classic pitching duel between East's Karen Kingsley (career-high 16 strikeouts, five hits, no-hitter until sixth) and Dunkirk's Amanda Mazurek (12 strikeouts, one-hitter).

In the fourth, Taylor Klun reached safely on an error, Chelsea Horne doubled to move Klun to third but Rachael Arenos chopped a ball to Mazurek who held it to prevent a run from scoring. With the bases loaded and one out, East could not get a hit to score a run.

East finishes 14-7 and graduates only two seniors - Courtney Rung and Kristen Gaglione.

Bridget Steele led East in hitting with a .413 batting average, 31 hits, and 20 runs. She also had a .467 slugging percentage and a .518 on-base percentage. Horne was second in batting average (.365) and first in slugging percentage (.750). Horne also had a team-high three home runs and 21 RBIs, and tied for first with Klun with four triples. Klun hit .344 with a .609 slugging percentage, 14 RBIs, and scored 19 runs. Rung hit .383 with a .483 slugging percentage, 16 RBIs, three doubles, 23 hits, and 13 runs.

On the mound, Kingsley was 6-2 with a 2.90 ERA and 64 strikeouts. She also had a save. Kelly Rusin was 5-4 with a 2.18 ERA and 32 strikeouts. In the field, five Lady Flames had a fielding percentage of 1.000 - Kingsley, Kelly McNamara, Jenna Reilly, Brittney Rung, and Jackie Vujec. Klun had a .994 fielding percentage in 144 innings. Rusin was at .989 in 106 innings. Jessica Windnagle was at .978 in 130 innings.
