Katie E. Montgomery and Michael J. Backus

Gale and Robert Montgomery of Sheldon, Vt., announce the engagement of their daughter, Katie Ellen Montgomery, to Michael Joseph Backus, son of Kathleen and David Backus of Lancaster.

Miss Montgomery is a 2000 graduate of Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans, Vt. She received a degree in aeronautical and mechanical engineering from Clarkson University in 2004. She is a mechanical engineer with National Grid in Syracuse.

Her fiance graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Kenmore in 2000. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson University in 2004. He is an electrical engineer at National Grid in Syracuse.

The couple live in Baldwinsville, N.Y.

A September 2007 wedding is planned in Sheldon, Vt.
