School News Emily S. Cherry of Snyder has been named a U.S. National Award Winner in mathematics, an award given to fewer than 10 percent of American high school students. She is a freshman at Amherst High School and was nominated by her math teacher Amy Valenti. She is the daughter of John and Kathryn Cherry and the granddaughter of Donald and Mary Louise Berg, all of Snyder. The Amherst Middle School Jazz Ensemble has been active throughout the 2007-2008 school year, having performed for the Amherst Central School Jazz Festival, at Windermere Elementary's annual bike rodeo, and at the annual Jazz Festival in Springville. The Jazz Ensemble placed third against some of WNY's premier jazz groups. Jeffrey J. Palmer is director of the ensemble. Scott D. Klein of Amherst has received a $500 GEICO Achievement Award for Academic Excellence. He is scheduled to graduate in May 2008 from Buffalo State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, a concentration in international business and a minor in finance. He is participating in a finance/investment internship with McNicholas Capital Corp. of Williamsville. Klein is also a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve and has been recognized for his service in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. |
