Amherst girls place second, 4x800 sets school record

Amherst coach Dan Tryon summed up his team's performance at the 50th annual ECIC meet last weekend as "unbelievable."

The Lady Tigers finished second overall with 57 points behind an excellent West Seneca East team.

Sophomore Allison Rogers won the 100-meter dash in 12.60 and was second in the 200 in 26.11. Freshman Brenna Symoniak finished third overall in the 3000 in 10:43.31 and came in fourth in the 1500 in 4:56.31. Sarah Lister finished fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.95.

The 4x100 team of Stephine Woods, Nasya Watson, Ariella Korn, and Rogers placed second overall with a time of 51.58 and the 4x800 team of Celia Alterio, Lister, Symoniak and Arielle Januszkiewicz set a school record of 9:58.73 to finish fourth overall.

"I'm extremely proud of all the girls the way they represented their school, their team, their coaches, and themselves," said Tryon.

Williamsville South

For the seventh time in eight years, South has won the 100 hurdles. This year it was freshman Allie Van Buren who took top honors, winning the race in 15.53. Van Buren raced well all day in the event, winning prelims in 15.50 and taking second in semifinals in 15.92.

Van Buren also took third in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 26.47. Van Buren will compete in the 100 hurdles and the 200 at the Section VI Championships this weekend at Starpoint High School.

Skye McClellan hit personal-best times in the 100 (13.75) and 200 (28.54) but did not qualify for finals. Jenny Mooney had a personal record in the 1500 (5:37.65) as did Rachel Zucker in the 400 (1:08.73).

Amanda Breymeier ran the 800 in 2:36.88 and did not qualify for finals. She leaped 4-10 in the high jump to tie for 11th. Breymeier will compete at sectionals in both events.

Colleen Hurtubise ran a 12:32.90 in the 3000. Stephanie Amodao cleared 7-0 in the pole vault. Megan Munroe ran a personal best split in the 4x800 relay (2:55.34). She started the season around 3:34.

South finished 14th in team scoring with 16 points

Williamsville North

The Lady Spartans broke several records at ECICs.

Kim Schueler's ninth-place time of 8:10.60 in the 2000 steeplechase destroyed the old record of 8:21 set by Jennifer Redino in 2001.

In the 4x400 relay, Lauren Triantafillou, Meredith Kirby, Michelle Bauman, and Kim Dohn broke a 19-year old school record with a time of 4:12.41 in the semifinals. The old record was 4:14.4, set in 1988. The team finished second in finals in 4:12.86.

Ashley Redino improved her time in the 400 hurdles by two seconds, winning the event in a personal-best 1:08.19. Redino came out of the first heat. Kirby was ninth in the 400 dash in 1:03.39.

In the 100 hurdles, Sarah Mikulski was third (15.77) and Redino was seventh (16.41).

Emily Curry triple jumped to second in a personal-best 34-4. She also was eighth in the high jump with a 4-10. Dohn won the 400 in 1:00.04. Redino was eighth in the long jump in 15-5.5.

The 4x100 relay of Jessica Little, Mikulski, Redino, and Loud were ninth with a time of 52.35.

Other North finishers included Little (200, 12th, 27.91; 100, 23rd, 13.62); Amy Loud (100 hurdles, 18th in prelims, 17.71; 200 21st, 28.66); Kim Schueler (1500, 19th, 5:23.02); Shelbey Gray (400 hurdles, 30th, 1:23.6); Melissa Dobmeier (3000, 32nd, 13:06.83); Lydia Yemchuk (discus, 34th, 75-10); Curry (discus, 28th, 83-4); Sarah Khan (pole vault, 14th, 7-6); and Amanda Sheriff (pole vault, 19th, 7-0).

"I thought the girls did really well in what I believe to be real strong girls track programs in Section VI," said North coach Julian Blake.

Sweet Home

Freshman Katie Niblock was fourth in the 800 (2:23.78), seventh in the 2000 steeplechase (8:00.75), and 12th in the 1500 (5:07.43). Older sister, senior Megan was third in the steeplechase (7:31.81), 13th in the triple jump (31-10.75), and 22nd in the 1500 (5:26.15).

Freshman Rebeccca White took fourth in the triple jump (33-8) and sixth in the 100 (13.20). Sophomore Marissa Criswell took seventh in the 200 in 27.18.

Bianca Smiley came in sixth in the long jump (15-9). Maygan Voros was 12th in the shot put (30-7.75).

Williamsville East

Senior Kaitlin Roseti became the first East girl to qualify for sectionals in the pentathlon with 2,122 points. She finished fourth. The qualifying score for sectionals is 2,100.

Also going to sectionals are Rosie McAfee (triple jump), Kala Allen (100, 200, 400), Kristen Ostanski (triple jump, 4x100 relay), and Caroline Steele (800).
