North boys tennis ends regular season 8-3 Williamsville North tennis finished the regular season with an 8-3 record. The Spartans closed out the regular season with 4-1 wins over West Seneca West and Lancaster on May 7 and 8, respectively, and 5-0 losses to Clarence on May 10 and 11. Against West Seneca West, Tony Miller (first singles, 6-0, 6-1), Alex Bronsky (third singles, 6-1, 6-1), Jack Jagodzinski and Julian Rothschild (first doubles, 6-4, 6-1), and Mike Beato and Younchi Luo (second doubles, 7-6, 7-5) recorded wins. Joe Elton lost 4-6, 5-7, at second singles. Versus Lancaster, Miller beat Tony Nitkowski, 6-2, 6-2, at first singles and Bronsky defeated Alex Jankowski, 6-2, 6-2, at third singles. Jagodzinski and Rothschild teamed up at first doubles to beat Josh Berry and Chris Fronziak, 6-0, 6-3, and Beato and Elton knocked off Mike Gerber and Brandon Kryszak, 6-4, 6-2, at second doubles. At second singles, Steve Glickman lost to Mike Kranz, 2-6, 6-7. The first match against Clarence saw Miller lose to Jarrett Regier, 0-6, 2-6, at first singles, Elton fall to Ryan Clover, 0-6, 0-6, at second singles, and Glickman drop a three-set (1-6, 6-4, 2-6) match to Mike Jurek at third singles. At first doubles, Jagodzinski and Rothschild fell to Sean Maloney and David Shim, 1-6, 6-3, 2-6, and Beato and Bronsky lost to Rocky Silvestro and Nick Sarles, 6-3, 5-7, 5-7. In the rematch, Miller lost to Regier, 1-6, 5-7, at first singles and Glickman lost to Clover, 2-6, 0-6, at third singles. Jagodzinski and Rothschild lost to Maloney and Shin, 2-6, 1-6, at first doubles and Beato and Bronsky fell to Silvestro and Sarles, 4-6, 6-4, 8-10 super tiebreaker, at second doubles. Matt Helm lost to Clover, 2-6, 0-6, at second singles. North's overall record placed them in the Gold Division of the ECIC Team Championships on Monday, May 21 at Clarence against Clarence and Pioneer. North lost to Clarence, 3-2, and defeated Pioneer, 3-2, in mini sets. Against Clarence, North took all three singles matches - Miller defeated Clover, 4-1, 4-1, at first singles, Bronsky lost to Regier, 1-4, 0-4, at second singles, and Glickman beat Shin, 5-3, 4-5, 10-4 super tiebreaker, at third singles - but lost both doubles matches. Jagodzinski and Rothschild fell to Jurek and Maloney, 0-4, 2-4, at first doubles and Beato and Elton lost to Silvestro and Sarles, 3-5, 2-4, at second doubles. The Spartans bounced back against Pioneer with Miller (4-0, 4-1, first singles), Glickman (4-1, 4-2, third singles) and Jagodzinski and Rothschild (2-4, 5-3, 5-3) earning points. Bronsky lost 1-4, 4-5, at second singles. Beato and Elton fell 5-3, 2-4, 2-4, at second doubles. At the ECIC singles tournament, Miller beat Springville's Mitchell Steiner, 6-2, 6-0 and Frontier's Ramsey Kasem, 6-2, 6-1, before losing to Regier, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6. In playbacks, Miller defeated Nitkowski, 6-1, 6-2, to place fifth and qualify for sectionals but declined. In the doubles tournament, Miller teamed up with Glickman and won 6-0, 6-0 over Maryvale's Tom Micalewski and Jeremy Mongiovi but lost to Orchard Park 4-6, 3-6. Jagodzinski and Rothschild beat East Aurora's Mike Kelly and Matt O'Shea, 6-1, 6-2, and lost to OP's Clark Driscoll and Matt Pappalardo, 0-6, 1-6. |
