Extra totes available mid-June

The price of extra totes has been set at $55 each for both the 65- and 95-gallon totes in the Town of Amherst.

Interim Senior Refuse Officer Charlie Moses said they will be available in approximately three weeks.

Second totes can be purchased after each eligible household has received its first tote.

"The process will be the same as the recycling containers. Residents will go to the clerk's office, pay and they will advise us," Moses said.

The totes will be delivered to the homeowner after payment. of the totes had been delivered, Moses said and completion was expected in the next three weeks.

The distribution of the garbage totes started at the beginning of May.

Moses said the Refuse Department has faced minor issues, less than expected, during the process. The initial deadline was expected be about Memorial Day.

"Residents who have their totes have been pretty happy. We have encouraged them to use them right away," he said, adding the feedback from waste management, which collects refuse, has also been positive.

He estimates 500 residents have expressed interest in a 65-gallon tote, 1,500 were ordered.
